TRAINING | 27 July 2010

Thanks for a fantastic turn-out and a committed effort at training this week!

Well done to Alice, Kali, Kyah, Charlotte, Indigo, Milly, Greta, Nikhili, Natasha, Brooke, Louise, Leila, Esme, Claire S, and Claire O'B, for giving it your all.

I didn't get through all the drills that I wanted to, but it was still a really worthwhile session.

After a solid warm-up... we played Aussie Rules Footy!

There's not a lot that 'egg-ball' players do well; actually, there's nothing at all they do well. For us though, this was all about practicing our kicking through the ball, and running and chasing with aggression, commitment and confidence.

We also did some slide tackling training, at Milly's request! I've watched some other Clubs practice the slide tackle, and more often than not, it just isn't trained right. No young player should ever be put at risk of serious injury at training, in my opinion.

The slide tackle is a tactical skill that we'll continue to develop as our team develops, and we'll learn to safely apply it in our matches.

Keep in mind though that the slide tackle isn't about leaping into the air and 'chopping' into the ball (and the opposition's legs). It's about making your body as 'long' as possible, in a low sweeping movement, and hitting the ball with a leg that's parallel to the ground. Done well, the slide tackle is a really elegant defensive strike. Remember to always keep your eyes on the ball, because if you miss-cue a slide tackle, the result is usually a caution or a send-off.

Our game this Saturday 31 July is against Woodside at Aldgate PS. Kick-off is at 2:30pm, so I'll see you all at the pitch by 1:30pm.

SKILLS TRAINING | 11 July 2010

Thanks to Meisha, Bronte, Alice, Milly, Esme, Claire O'B, Charlotte, Leila, Claire S, Kyah and Indigo (and Mums and Dads) for coming out today. It was a really positive and worthwhile session. You were all focussed and worked hard to develop your kicking skills.

Thanks also for your attention during my protracted discussion on tactics at the start of the session. If our squad is to develop like I know it can, we simply must start talking set plays, switches and rotations. Hopefully one day we'll have clubrooms and a whiteboard to do this in comfort, before hitting the pitch!

Our program for today consisted of the following elements:

1. Introduction to our rotational ‘slide’ and ‘switch’ strategy.

2. Kicking: Where are we going wrong?

3. Kicking: What can we do to improve?

4. Overview of long-range kicking styles:

• Bend
• Volley
• Bouncing Volley
• Straight-On Strike

5. One-on-one individual review/development of kicking styles.

6. DRILL 01: In pairs… roll set-up and strike to partner.

7. DRILL 02: In pairs… throw set-up and strike to partner.

8. DRILL 03: In pairs… volleying from seated position. Both feet.

9. Mini-Match and/or Circle-Work

Thanks to Jake S for coming out to assist today. I really appreciate your input, Jake.

See you all at our next training session, Tuesday 13 July, at 5pm.

TRAINING | 6 July 2010

Thanks to Louise, Bronte, Kali, Leila, Meisha and Alice for coming out to training tonight. It was a great session!

There are two clear areas of our game which we need to improve on; we don't mark tight enough and we don't kick long and cleanly enough. We addressed both tonight.

In our matches, every single one of our players must focus on manning-up hard. Defenders, your primary goal is to stop opposition forwards from touching the ball, and if they do get a touch, you must pressure them into making mistakes. Frustrate them and intimidate them. Keep your bodies as close to them as you can, but remember, keep your elbows in and don't tackle from behind. The latter won't be a problem if you stay in front of your opposition player.

Attackers, when our opposition holds the ball up at their end, particularly at goal kicks, you must intimidate and frustrate their defenders. Remember to always edge your way goal-side, because one of the easiest opportunities you'll have to score is to intercept a misguided or badly struck goal kick. If they hit it OK, our mids must be ready to cut it off and push it back to you.

Our kicking out from back needs to be longer, lofted and more direct. We've been relying way too heavily on our goalie to get the ball mid-field. Our strikers are out of the game if we can't get the ball up there for them, so our mids need to step up if we're not clearing cleanly from defence. Make space for your defenders, mids, by moving out wide and calling hard.

Thanks so much to Kali's Mum, Sally, for giving us a hand at training tonight. Thanks also to Alice's Mum, Liz, for sticking around to collect wayward balls. We need to work on your kicking, Liz! Finally, thanks to you all for making sure that all our gear was put away when we finished our session.

We'll be training next Tuesday 13 July at 5:00pm - 6:30pm. Please do all you can to attend, because this will be an important preparatory skills/strategy session for our next match.

MATCH 11 WRAP | Mount Barker | 3 July 2010

I must give credit where credit's due; Mount Barker are an incredibly professional outfit, and they set out to win big today, and win big they did.

My coaching style is very different to most others. I believe in our players, and I'll always assume that you'll give us your best in the positions you're allocated. If you don't work hard, we don't win. It's that simple.

I noticed that the Mount Barker coach was really rattled in the first 15 minutes; a few of their players were copping it pretty hard from the sidelines, and at least one was dragged. To their coaches credit, however, it did the trick. Their players lifted, and after they'd put a few away, it was all smiles on the Mount Barker coaching bench.

Mid-way through the second, we adopted a 4-3-3-1 structure to see if we could peg one back. It didn't happen, but we came close, and we were starting to look OK. I'd like to congratulate Fiona and Milly, because it was their commitment and determination in defence that allowed us to throw the extra player up front.

I'd also like to thank Bronte and Louise for never giving up. They came together late in the game to devise a strategy that would get us close to goal, and it very nearly paid off. Louise made three brilliant runs through the centre, but Mount Barker were quick to flood their defence.

We've got a bye next week, but on 17 July 2010, we play Mount Barker again on our home turf. We'll have the State Opposition Leader, Isobel Redmond, tossing the coin and supporting us.

On the day, we'll be raffling off a signed Parliamentary wine package, and we'll also be cooking up a massive sausage sizzle storm, so please invite all your family and friends to come out and support our U14G Mt Lofty Eagles squad.

Thanks again to Fiona and Milly, as well as Claire, Alice and Greta for figuring in our best today. You were an inspiration, and you ran your legs off for us!

Thanks also to Nikhili for doing a great job in goal in the first half. It might not have felt like it Nikhili, but there wasn't much you could do, and that's why I gave you a well-deserved clap at half time. Sahara, I hope your knee's OK!

The next two training sessions are important, so please do your best to attend. We'll be talking strategy and structure, and focussing on ball/skill work.

See you at training on Tuesday, 5:30 - 7:00pm.

MATCH 10 WRAP | Hahndorf | 26 June 2010

What an awesome win against Hahndorf today at Mylor Oval! Well done team!!!

It's great to see you all enjoying your soccer, and it's even more satisfying when we do it against a really tough opposition. Hahndorf were never going to be a pushover, but there were still plenty of smiles and laughs all round, particularly in the second when we totally dominated the game.

Fiona was given the captain's armband this week, after displaying great leadership against Woodside. We kicked off with the breeze and against the slope of a well-drained but uncut pitch. I was running the full length of the sideline, but found myself more often in our forward half than back. The two teams looked pretty even, but we were starting convincingly and moving the ball well. This was looking very good for Lofty because we always come home hard.

The first half saw our backs holding and delivering well to our mids and forwards. Nikhili was looking particularly solid in goal, as was Sahara in defence, Bronte and Alice in mid, and Brooke, Louise and Claire O'Brien up front. Our strike-force were working really well together up there, passing off and making space; but we just couldn't capitalise. We were holding just one step too long, and we really should have made the Hahndorf keeper work harder for her half-time oranges. Bronte was confident, and shooting from distance, but a number of off-target strikes were keeping Hahndorf in the game. That said, she was destined to score, and she brought the house down with a trademark lob below the cross-bar and above the keeper. The snakes were waiting to be eaten by a Lofty team that was in front and playing beautifully.

In the second, Greta, Natasha and Kyah hit the pitch to replace Milly, Alice and Brooke. We started the final 40 minutes where we left off, playing hard, committed and as a team.

With 30 minutes left to play, our gutsy central defender, Meisha, copped a hard knock just above the knee, and Milly was called back into action. Meanwhile, our forwards were cranking it up a notch, with Louise and Kali running rings around a hard-working Hahndorf defence. Kyah was providing solid support at left wing, as was Bronte in central mid, and Nikhili was booting the bladder out of the ball from our goal square. Greta was playing determined as ever, making a brilliant run down the right side of the pitch towards goal, but falling just short of making it count on the score-sheet.

It was only a matter of time before our strikers hit the back of the net, but unfortunately for us, the final whistle came too soon. Louise and Kali; you should both stand tall, because when you hold the ball up forward like you did today, it takes a heap of pressure off our defence. Both you guys really deserved a goal!

Congratulations to Nikhili, Fiona, Bronte, Sahara, Louise and Kali for figuring in our top-player list this week.

Let's keep the Lofty team spirit going guys. Well done!!!

MATCH 09 WRAP | Woodside | 19 June 2010

After a bye last week, we all converged on the Woodside pitch today brimming with confidence.

Our plan for this one was to structure up a back five that would hold the opposition goalless for the full 80 minutes, while rotating and experimenting our mids and attack. We started the game with Charlotte, Louise and Brooke up front, with Nikhili and Meisha charged with frustrating Woodsides' key strikers in central defence.

Milly and Fiona were initially given defensive running roles, and both players really stood up, with Fiona taking control in a sweeping position, and Milly sprinting hard up the sideline and back to assist Nikhili, Meisha and Kyah.

It often takes us a bit to get settled up forward, and this game was no exception. The boggy, undulating pitch, as well as the uprights, were working to Woodsides' favour, but we eventually broke the shackles. Brooke Neale then netted her first goal of the season, to put Lofty two up. Congratulations Brooke!

After a pretty lazy game by both sides in the first half, we headed for the snakes with one goal less than we'd planned for. We really needed to lift our commitment level in the second half if we were to take outright second place on the ladder, and boy, did Fiona let us all know it!!! Well done Fiona... great leadership shown today.

The second half kicked off well for us, with Bronte finding her range, and Fiona controlling our front-line offence. Meanwhile, our backs were playing as solid as ever, with Nikhili, Meisha, Sahara and Milly playing their hearts out in front of goal. Unfortunately for Kyah, she hardly got a touch, but the touches she had were telling. Solid work, Kyah, and great booting out today!

With our defence playing strong, it was all up to our forwards to capitalise and make it pay on the score sheet. Bronte started to fire and cracked an absolute ripper into the top of the Woodside net today. Her lofted strike was beautiful to watch, and off the boot, we all knew it was in. Fiona also stepped in for a goal, as did Greta with a perfect deflection into the left half of the Woodside net. Again, well done Fiona; and Greta, you played so well today, and you really deserved your goal.

Congratulations to Fiona, Greta, Brooke, Bronte and Milly for figuring in our best today.

Lofty, despite the slow start, we were always playing like a team in this one, and that's all that matters. Well done girls!!!

MATCH 08 WRAP | Strathalbyn | 5 June 2010

Every single one of you should feel really, really proud. You were amazing today guys!

To say that this one was going to be a tough ask would be an understatement. We were playing against the top-ranked team in our league. Strathalbyn were not only unbeaten this year, but they were coming into the game without a single goal scored against them; and to add to the pressure, we were playing them at their home ground!!!

We had a lot of outs this week, but we were still able to stick to the core structure of our pre-match line-up. The only real difference was that Nikhili went into goal, and Claire O'Brien started in defence.

The first half was a pretty tough grind against the cross-wind for both teams, but Lofty controlled most of the play. Our backs were again rock solid, and our forwards were trying their hearts out against a very well organised Strathalbyn defence... we just couldn't create an opportunity to finish.

Unfortunately, Strathalbyn broke through our defence with a lucky one, just minutes before the half-time break.

In the second half, the game was all Lofty, like it almost always is.

We were understandably tired, but our backs kept marking tight and running hard, while our forwards were really starting to expose weaknesses in their defence. Kali had us all on the edge of our seats when she took on the Strathalbyn backs before poking a ripper across the goal line. That was the first time a ball had hit the back of Strathalbyn's net this season.

Bronte then cracked an awesome long-range, lofted strike from well out, which we all thought was destined for the right side of the cross-bar. She had their keeper well and truly beaten, but the ball shaved the top of the net.

We were really enjoying the game and the ascendancy when Kali stepped up to put another away, and Nikhili saved an absolute blinder to keep us in front. The second half felt like it went for an hour, but eventually the whistle blew and the game was ours.

Congratulations to Claire, Greta, Sahara and Natasha for playing their best games of the season so far.

Lofty, you're really playing like a team, and you've proven that you can beat anyone.

MT LOFTY vs Strathalbyn @ Strathalbyn P2

Below are the first and second half line-ups for our game against Strathalbyn. We've got a few girls out this Saturday, but we'll still be going in really strong with a solid squad of 14.

Kick-off at 1:30pm. Please be at the ground by 12:45pm.

MATCH 07 SUMMARY | Stirling District | 29 May 2010

We arrived at a very sloppy Aldgate PS pitch today to take on Stirling District, and to make things tougher for us, we only had 12 players. This was going to be an interesting game.

Bronte was nominated as our Captain this week, with Brooke in support as Vice-Captain. There were a few laughs when our guest, Jamie Briggs MP, threw a dodgy first toss of the coin, but after a decent one was flipped, the game was on. Lofty won the toss and Bronte chose to play downhill and against the wind.

From the outset, Lofty was constantly pushing forward, with our forward-backs and mids creating some amazing opportunities for our strikers. We fought hard up front, but struggled to get a shot on goal in the bad conditions. Stirling were flooding and crowding their defense, so we really should have done what we've been working hard on at training; MAKING SPACE.

On the day, our attack were pretty much playing like defenders. We were hanging back, resting, and waiting.

Brooke was working her heart out on the wing, but still dropping a little too far back, and so was Claire on the right, but Bronte was in total control in centre-mid. With Louise out, Bronte stepped up and cracked a scorcher from a way out for Lofty's lead.

We really should have gone for the oranges with a bigger first-half advantage.

In the second half, Kali started to play like we know she can, as did our super-star runner in defense, Meisha. Bronte stepped up again to pepper the goal from long-range with a number of beautiful, lofted strikes. She was robbed of at least two goals, but importantly, she bagged the clincher for us.

This was a really gutsy effort by our depleted yet determined squad ...!

Great work on the day guys... particularly by Bronte, Meisha, Brooke, Natasha, Milly, and Sahara.

MATCH 06 | Mt Barker | 22 May 2010

We were definitely the underdogs coming into this game, with our opposition sitting second on the ladder, but after a hard-fought battle that went right down to the wire, Lofty came away with the points.

Once again, we kicked-off with strong front and back line-ups, while also trialling a few players across the mids and wings. It was important to get off to a start on this one or we were really going to find the going tough in the second, when six new rotations were to be pitched and asked to find their feet quickly. Luckily for Lofty, Louise stepped up and put a cracker away.

The strategy for this game was to get a scoreboard jump on Mt Barker, and if they levelled later, we'd swing back into an offensive set-up. This game was never going to be a draw. We were committed to giving every girl a fair run, and we were going to take some risks.

We were forced to deal with a few injuries in the first, with Meisha copping a hard knock to the shin, and Indigo getting a boot to the head. Both our girls were courageous and wanted to fight on, but we decided to give them a rest and rush Alice and Kyah into the action.

As you'd expect from a decent squad, Mt Barker got their leveller, and looked the goods for a second and third, and maybe more. It was tactic time mid-way through the second, and Louise was subbed back on up front, and Nikhili went to centre-back.

When Louise scored her second goal to again give us the lead, the Lofty sideline erupted into cheers and applause.

Now, we really had to defend hard ...!

Sahara, Nikhili, Meisha, and Milly were so committed for us. Thanks guys! Tight marking and hard running gave us some real hope, while Kyah was playing brilliantly in goal. She somehow stopped a flurry of Mt Barker efforts that really should have hit the back of our net.

After a frantic, nail-biting final few minutes, the whistle blew and this one was ours. We really deserved it too, if only for our sheer grit and determination.

I'd really like to thank Brooke Neale for another killer game. Thanks so much for all your hard running, Brooke! Thanks also to the ever-reliable Meisha for another gutsy performance. Congratulations to Louise and Kyah for making our best-player list this weekend.

Finally, thanks to our assistant coach, Jake Sparrow, for his insight and guidance to the squad at the sidelines, and to the Sparrow family for providing the girls with a tree-full of oranges this week. Thanks Sue and Andrew ...!

Great effort guys ...!!!

MATCH 05 | Hahndorf | 15 May 2010

Well done guys. What a sensational effort ...!

This was always going to be a tough ask, playing Hahndorf away, but we more than matched them today. This was a brilliant game for Lofty ...!

We had Hahndorf playing nervously all match. Our defense was rock solid, and our forwards were finding ways through, but we just couldn't capitalise. Bronte was peppering the goal from outside, and Louise was turning beautifully to beat three or four defenders at a time, but her goal was elusive.

Brooke made some great runs forward in the second half, and we were all sure that she'd boot one or two for Lofty, but her best chance hit the upright. Fantastic effort though Brooke! You, Charlotte, and Esme ran your hearts out for us today.

Louise came back on late in the second, and this marked a courageous last surge for Lofty. There were no goals, but that didn't matter; I could hear the Hahndorf mum's and dad's saying how close the game was, and praising us for our commitment and second-efforts.

Finally, I'd like to thank Milly, Meisha, Nikhili and Sahara. You were brilliant today guys, as was our keeper Kyah, who made some stunning saves on the goal line.

TRAINING 05 | 11 May 2010

Thanks to everyone for attending training this evening. It was a full house ...!

We kicked the night off with a brief chat about Saturday's sensational 7-0 Cup win over Woodside, and we also talked about our new way of organising match-day line-ups.

We've got a huge squad, but that doesn't mean that we can't all play a part in blowing our opposition off the park, while having some fun while we're at it ...!

Thanks so much to Jake Sparrow (Claire's brother) for coming out and giving us a hand again. Jake took Nikhili, Kyah, Louise, and Bronte to the end goal for some specialist skills training, while I looked after a 'bibs v shirts' mini-match at the other. The shirts appeared to have the early ascendancy, but the bibs emerged as the eventual winners, after realising that it was pretty damn hard to score goals on piggy-back.

I'd really like to congratulate Brooke Neale for an outstanding effort at training this week. Brooke was already going to be our second-half striker against Hahndorf on Saturday, and her work tonight showed that she's more than capable of netting a bag for Lofty. I'd also like to thank Leila and Esme for showing some real courage and conviction, and strength of character during the mini-match. You both started attacking the ball like you really wanted it, so well done ...!

MATCH 04 | Association Cup Round | Woodside | 8 May 2010

To compete in the next stage of the Association Cup, this was a 'must win' for the girls, and they all did us proud. We're into the semi-finals ...!!!

The first quarter saw both Lofty and Woodside fighting hard, and to be honest, it felt as though the game could have gone either way. We pitched a strong team at the start, but despite that, we were struggling a bit. Woodside were flooding their defense, and their forwards were playing fresh and strong. Woodside looked the goods.

To the girls' credit, they ground it out and broke the deadlock. We hit the side of the net a few times, as we did the uprights, but we headed for the oranges with a lead.

In the second half, we continued the ascendancy of our latter-first, and it was all Lofty. We were peppering the goals, but more importantly, we netted some awesome top-corner strikes. It was amazing to watch Louise and Kali turning and shooting with intent, and Bronte hitting the ball hard from both the corner sets and long.

I really feel that the heroes of this game though, were our defenders, so I'd like to congratulate our backs and mids for a job well done. If you guys didn't hold and push the ball forward, our strikers wouldn't have got a look in.

Fiona did amazing work in our defense. Nikhili and Fiona dominated in the second half, and Woodside's best striker didn't know what to do but to play rough.

Congratulations must also go to Meisha, as one of our best players of the day, for such a strong and committed effort. She went in so hard at every tackle, and put her body on the line, time and time again. We all hope your knee's OK, Meisha.

A big thanks too, to our fantastic goalies, Indigo and Kyah, for the clean sheet.

Great job girls. That was one hell of a win ...!

TRAINING 04 | 4 May 2010

Thanks to all who attended training this week. I really appreciate the efforts made by both players and parents to brave the weather. We had 11 girls out for a run, which was great.

It was always going to be 'iffy', considering the amount of rain we had in the hills on the day, but thankfully it all cleared up for a good session.

We started with a lap of the oval (which in all honesty was only a half-lap!) and then some mild stretches.

Next was group passing and exercises, first in fours and threes, and then twos. We then broke training into two big groups, with Indigo, Claire, Bronte, and I, looking at how we can improve our crosses and set-up for corner kicks, while Deb looked after additional two on two skills training and dribbling/passing fitness.

After an always popular 'monkey-in-the-middle' drill, we played '5 a side', with Indigo in goal for the shirts and Deb in goal for the bibs. Result: MOUNT LOFTY 1 - MOUNT LOFTY 1.

Training Note:
Lead and call hard at set plays. When we're awarded a corner, free kick or throw, no Lofty player should ever be standing still. Drop away, back, and/or wide to provide a passing option for your teammates.

MATCH 03 | Woodside | 1 May 2010

Great win guys!!!

You should all feel really proud and positive about the result. Woodside are a very good team, with some strong up front and back players.

We netted 5 goals, which was brilliant, but we also saw some of our less experienced players step up and perform well for us in new positions, particularly in the mid. I honestly think that the efforts and commitment of our team at training is now paying dividends for us on game day.

We fielded a strong Mt Lofty line-up at kick-off for this one, and this set us up for our less experienced players to both come on, and be rotated, and trialled across a number of positions.

I'd like to congratulate our 3 strikers for a job well done, and Kali particularly for her stunning 3-goal effort. At the other end, we saw some beautiful goal-work by Indigoe in the 1st and Kyah in the 2nd, as well as some great stopping by Nikhili and Meisha.

Even though we didn't win by 10 goals, you'll still get your new strips! Nice work.

Result:
MOUNT LOFTY 5 - Woodside 1
